You’ve come up with a great app idea and you want to share it with the world. You can reach roughly 95% of smartphone consumers by releasing your app to both platforms. Ignoring one platform can inadvertently hurt your app’s acceptance and usage in the marketplace. Unfortunately, however, designing and coding for one does not automatically mean copying the code over for the other.
When building an app for iOS or Android platforms, you must consider the user’s personal experience. Because iOS and Android platforms have been around for such a long time, users of each platform have grown accustomed to doing things a particular way. When creating an app that performs a certain set of tasks, you must be sure that the way your app performs those tasks follows the way the user expects, given their experience with other apps on that platform. How users view and save their pictures on iOS devices is different compared to how Android devices perform the same task, so you must adhere to the developer’s platform standards or risk confusing the user and hurt the acceptance and popularity of your app.
The final product will rarely be a perfect mirror-image on different types of devices. Instead, it will most likely be two separate similar-looking apps that tackle the same problem. iOS and Android, though different operating systems, are both advanced platforms with a plethora of unique features of which developers should be aware. These may include Apple’s 3D touch, or Android’s special home screen widgets. Taking advantage of these features is the key to taking your app to the next level. Not only should you focus on improving the app in general – you should also spend some time capitalizing on the advantages and minimizing the disadvantages when designing for each of the platforms, but that is the subject of another blog.
